Need Help?

Airline ticket sales remain a prime target for fraudsters. Card payment fraud is estimated at over one billion dollars a year across the industry, and the pattern behind it rarely stays confined to a single carrier. A stolen card used against one airline today is very likely to surface against another airline, or another merchant entirely, tomorrow, which means no single airline sees the full picture on its own.

IATA Perseuss is a fraud intelligence-sharing platform for airlines and travel merchants who enables secure sharing of fraud data, helping participants identify suspicious activity and detect fraud patterns across industries and regions.

Key Benefits

Need Help?

IATA Perseuss gives airlines real-time access to cross-sector fraud data through community-based sharing with other airlines and merchants. Fraudsters don't limit themselves to one industry or region: on average, 35% of fraud overlaps between merchants. By cooperating and learning from each other, participating airlines close that gap instead of leaving it open to exploit.

In practice, this means an airline's fraud team is no longer working from its own transaction history alone. Every check against the IATA Perseuss database draws on patterns reported by the wider community, so a fraud ring that has already been flagged by one airline can be stopped before it repeats the same scheme against another.

Beyond intelligence sharing, IATA Perseuss reduces manual review workload and fraud costs directly: transactions are checked against the IATA Perseuss database in real time, via API or through your Payment Service Provider, using a hybrid scoring model to flag risk before it becomes a chargeback. Analysts get a clear, prioritised view of which transactions actually need a closer look, rather than reviewing everything by hand.

The result is fewer false declines on genuine customers, fewer chargebacks to absorb, and a fraud operation that scales with transaction volume instead of headcount. For airlines weighing where to invest limited fraud-prevention resources, joining a network that already covers a large share of global card-fraud activity is typically faster and cheaper than building equivalent detection in-house.

Fraud doesn't stop at the point of ticketing. Travel agents sit at a critical point in the payment chain, often the exact moment a stolen card is first tested against a real transaction, and face the same schemes as airlines and other merchants, sometimes before an airline ever sees the booking.

IATA Perseuss extends its real-time, community-based fraud intelligence to agency transactions, giving travel agents access to the same cross-sector data used by airlines and other participants. As fraud typically overlaps across merchants, an agency's own transaction history is rarely the whole story: being part of the IATA Perseuss network fills in what a single agency can't see alone.

For an agency processing bookings across multiple airlines and payment methods, this cross-sector view is particularly valuable: a card or pattern already flagged elsewhere in the network can be surfaced before the ticket is issued, rather than discovered weeks later as a chargeback. This is especially relevant for high-value or last-minute bookings, which fraudsters tend to favour precisely because they leave less time for manual review.

Participation helps agencies catch suspicious bookings before they're ticketed, reducing chargebacks, manual review time, and the knock-on cost of fraud losses, including the harder-to-quantify cost of losing airline supplier trust when fraud rates run high. It also supports agencies working to meet payment-industry compliance expectations, since demonstrable fraud controls are increasingly part of what acquirers and card schemes look for.

For payment service providers, gateways and fraud-tooling vendors, IATA Perseuss is built to integrate, not to replace what's already in place. Rather than asking clients to adopt a new standalone tool, IATA Perseuss is designed to sit inside the decisioning flow you already provide, adding a layer of cross-sector data that no single provider could assemble alone.

IATA Perseuss connects via API, either directly or on behalf of your merchant clients through your existing PSP relationship. Each transaction can be checked against the IATA Perseuss database in real time, with a hybrid scoring model returning a fraud-risk assessment that plugs into your own decisioning flow. Because the check happens at transaction time, the added latency is minimal, and the result can be folded straight into whatever risk rules or thresholds your platform already applies.

On top of the real-time checks, IATA Perseuss gives fraud analysts deeper, case-level investigation tools for the transactions that need a closer look, useful both for your own risk operations and as an added-value feature you can offer to the merchants and airlines you serve. This turns fraud intelligence from a one-off score into an ongoing investigative capability.

The result for IT providers: a fraud data layer that adds cross-sector visibility to your platform without requiring your clients to change how they already work, and a way to differentiate your offering with intelligence drawn from a global, aviation-specific fraud network rather than generic industry data.
