Shabstec Limited: The Future of Baggage

Shabstec was formed in 2015 to specifically address the lack of innovation and progress within the aviation sector’s baggage handling logistics and associated IT solution capability. Shabstec wants to transform the traditional conveyor-based baggage systems to autonomous electric carts that are more energy efficient and have much lower capex / opex costs. From a software perspective, Shabstec offers Cloud-based baggage logistics solutions that are fully compliant with IATA’s 1755 standards. The software’s API based structure ensures ease of integration with third party systems. Shabstec’s focus is on specific objectives to help our customers’ drive to net zero emissions, as well as the on-time, safe and secure delivery of passengers’ luggage. With our intimate Baggage Handling System (BHS) knowledge, we intend to digitalize the workplace and make efficient use of both human and machine resources.

Ultimately, Shabstec sees baggage logistics and its associated IT related functions as commodity items. We believe that the timing is now optimal to offer this type of capability on a software as a service (SAAS) basis, where the client pays a monthly subscription fee instead of vast upfront development costs. For too long, airports have relied on bespoke logistics services to meet their complex baggage IT needs. Shabstec’s wealth of experience has produced a roadmap that will deliver a simplified business / technology model. To appeal to the widest customer base, Shabstec intends to offer its services via an on-premises and cloud basis. We will work with our Technology partners to ensure that the highest levels of security and reliability are delivered.

Our focus on robotics and electronic bag tagging means less reliance on human factors at Check-in and Makeup. Passengers will spend less time queuing at peak hours. We believe that current technology has the capability to reduce the airport / airline carbon footprint. Specifically, Shabstec are currently working on solutions to reduce the need for bag tags for every bag that is checked in. New data standards coupled with passenger / airline acceptance to change behavior, resulting from the pandemic, means that we have the ideal ingredients to exploit a new people / process and technology possibility. The Shabstec TagForLife® is a true innovation allowing passengers to check-in from home or remote locations and simply drop their luggage off when arriving at the airport, bypassing queuing. Customers can purchase the TagForLife® through airport and airline outlets.

Our autonomous all electric Rover transforms the physical baggage system domain by offering a simplified passenger experience, improved airport space utilization, competitive CAPEX and OPEX costs, whilst allowing a quicker deployment of airport facilities. Our TagForLife concept works in conjunction with the Rover to address the bag identity problem and ensure every bag is delivered to all passengers.

The IT essentially covers the systems and solutions that receive information and provide real-time decision and planning capability for flight, passenger, equipment and bag-related aspects.
