Evos: Addressing the Urgent Need for SAF Storage and Blending in Europe

Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is crucial to achieving net zero aviation emissions by 2050. IATA estimates that 3.5 million tons of SAF will be needed in Europe by 2030, driven by increasing mandates. The current 2% blending requirement for European airlines will rise to 6% by 2030, alongside a 0.7% sub-mandate for e-SAF.

A key challenge in meeting this demand is the limited storage and blending capacity for SAF. Since unblended SAF (e.g., HEFA-SPK) cannot be loaded onto aircraft in its pure form, dedicated infrastructure is required, adding complexity and limiting supply chain flexibility, while increasing logistical challenges and the demand for storage capacity.

Expanding infrastructure to meet demand

Evos is addressing this challenge by significantly increasing SAF storage and handling capacity. As Europe’s largest segregated HEFA-SPK storage provider, we currently offer dedicated capacity, which will grow to 200,000 cubic metres this year. This expansion will provide vital infrastructure for SAF producers, airlines and industry partners.

Supporting European airlines with strategic locations

Our Ghent terminal has already played a key role, achieving a milestone in January 2023 with the first-ever SAF delivery to Brussels Airport via the NATO Central European Pipeline System (CEPS).

In Amsterdam, Evos supplies a major share of Schiphol’s jet fuel, including SAF, through a dedicated pipeline, helping to accelerate aviation’s transition to cleaner energy.

Evos’ multimodal logistics network—including sea, rail, truck and pipeline connections—enhances supply chain flexibility, enabling SAF to reach demand centres efficiently. With direct CEPS access and investments in rail infrastructure, we are solving logistical challenges and strengthening SAF adoption across the region.

A commitment to cleaner skies

Evos is driving the aviation industry’s shift to SAF by expanding infrastructure, fostering partnerships and delivering flexible logistics solutions. We break down barriers to SAF adoption, ensuring a reliable supply for a more sustainable future.

Collaboration is key—only by working together can we scale SAF to meet aviation’s ambitious climate goals. Our adaptable approach helps partners navigate regulatory, logistical and supply chain challenges with confidence.

"Let’s evolve together" reflects our commitment to innovation, flexibility and teamwork in accelerating aviation’s decarbonization.
